The series has been some time in the works; after the success of One Bright Star, I encouraged John to write about the childhood adventures to which the adults refer throughout the novella, but he did not wish to retread ground he had previously covered, even in reference. Instead, he came up with the idea of the Day World, the Twilight World, and the Night World, and soulless elfs that are fey and cruel because they know that despite their beauty and power, they are ultimately doomed.
